Game Based Organization Design

The financial crisis, the housing bubble, the unstable labor market, the shaky pension system and the rising cost of healthcare. These are just some examples of systems that are close to their breaking point or that have outright failed. It is a sign of our times. Your organization operates amid growing complexity. Many managers are looking for innovative organizational designs as a response to their fast-changing environment. But it is necessary to get a grasp on the complex system you are part of, to understand its mechanics, before you can productively design your organization.

There is a domain in which embracing complexity is the norm. That is the domain of games. Game players and game designers know that a simple set of rules can let complex behavior emerge. Game designers have learned to harness this complexity. The Game Based Organization Design approach draws lessons from this field. It does not prescribe a specific organizational design but rather, it is a tool that uses the game design lens to co-create new organizational arrangements with all relevant stakeholders.

Jeroen van Bree was awarded a PhD for the academic underpinning of the Game Based Organization Design approach on April 9, 2013 at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. You can find a short summary of the PhD thesis - entitled Exploring the rules by playing the game - in this PDF document. A book based on this work is under contract with Palgrave Macmillan, with a tentative publication date in the second half of 2013.

Some of the organizations where Game Based Organization Design has been applied are:
Medisch Centrum Alkmaar (documented in this journal article)
We Beat The Mountain (documented in this research paper)
VGZ (documented in this [Dutch] blog post)
Rabobank Nederland (documented in this [Dutch] PDF document)
